"Got My Way was written about almost losing my mother to a heart attack. Last year on Mother's Day, I played her this song right after I wrote it, and we put out the finished track this Mother's Day. Sadly, I wasn’t able to spend Mother’s Day with her this year as her heart attack puts her at risk for serious complications with COVID-19. It all happened so quickly by the time my father was able to tell me she had a heart attack she was already recovering in the hospital. In that moment, I experienced intense sadness, love, relief, and regret all at once. My mother and I have had a beautiful relationship, but the idea that I could have lost her made me feel ashamed for even a split second I took for granted. This song is about the regrets I would have had if we had lost her that day, and I hope it serves as a reminder to tell the ones you love that you love them when you can."
lyrics
Cut you off when I was young
Just to run with the real ones
See my name hang up in the rafters
Didn’t cry when your heart stopped
Never called now my time’s up
I can’t feel nothing
Nothing matters
Love left on my tongue
Got my way, look what I’ve done
What have I done?
But kept a son from you
Thought I’d die before 19
Won a prize but had no peace
I felt ashamed of feeling worthless
But you knew to save me when pride kept me silent
Oh I wish I thanked you when I could have
Love left on my tongue
Got my way, look what I’ve done
What have I done?
But kept a son from you
What have I done?
What have I done to you?
What have I done?
What have I done to you?
You gave me the space when I needed some
Let me push you away just to be someone
And now I’m left here
Leaving voicemails every day
Least I got my way
Space when I needed some
Let me push you away just to be someone
And now I’m left here
Leaving voicemails every day
Least I got my way
Love left on my tongue
Got my way, look what I’ve done
What have I done?
But kept a son from you
What have I done?
What have I done to you?
What have I done?
What have I done to you?
You gave me the space when I needed some
Let me push you away just to be someone
And now I’m left here
Leaving voicemails every day
Least I got my way
Least I got my way
Think I lost my way...
